More Good News for Vapers as Study Shows Again That the Risks of Vaping Are Far Less Than Tobacco
Philip Morris International (PMI) recently conducted a 6-month study, in collaboration with Altria Group, Inc., looking at the effect of e-cig vapour on the risk of cardiopulmonary diseases. The results show far fewer biological responses associated with these diseases in vapour compared to tobacco smoke. Again, this adds to the mounting evidence of the much lower risks of vaping compared to smoking.
The results were announced at the Society of Toxicology 58th Annual Meeting and ToxExpo held between March 10-14, 2019 in Baltimore, US. The study measured what impact e-liquid vapour had on the risks of developing diseases of the cardiopulmonary system compared to tobacco smoke.
How the study was conducted
Female mice were exposed to three types of e-cig vapour (non-nicotine, nicotine and flavoured), tobacco smoke and air for 3 hours per day, 5 days a week, over a 6-month period.
The results – vapour causes far less lung and heart damage compared to smoking
After 6 months, the mice exposed to the three types of e-cig vapour experienced less lung inflammation and damage and less plaque formation and molecular changes in the heart tissue compared to tobacco smoke.
This means that vapers have far lower biological responses connected with cardiopulmonary diseases than those people still smoking tobacco.
Adds to the evidence of the lower risks of vaping
We agree. The sheer amount of dangerous chemicals which smokers are exposed to compared to vaping is well documented. Now with this study, the risk of developing cardiopulmonary diseases is also far less with vaping, further adding to the evidence of the lower risks of vaping compared to smoking.
The NHS, Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians all advocate the use of e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to smoking. So if you’re looking to make the switch from cigarettes, read our article on Quitting Smoking With Vaping to get you moving in the right direction.
