50/50 vs 70/30 E-Liquid: Which Ratio is Right for Your Device

Most vapers, especially those who are just starting with vaping, tend not to think about ratios at the start. Flavour, nicotine strength, or brands usually get all the attention. The problem is that this formulation tells more about how well your e-liquid performs in your device.

Those two numbers describe the split between the two base ingredients in every e-liquid: vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). And understanding what each does and which ratios suit your setup will save you a lot of frustration down the line.

Basically, these numbers indicate how much VG and PG are inside the liquid. Nothing more complicated than that, but the effect of each blend is where things start to matter.

The key to understanding the meaning of VG/PG is knowing how each ingredient works

VG is thick, slightly sweet, and derived from vegetable fats. What VG means in vape juice comes down to vapour. It is responsible for thick cloud production. On inhale, it feels softer and smoother, while the exhale brings denser clouds.

PG, on the other hand, is much thinner and almost tasteless on its own, making it more effective to carry flavourings and nicotine strength. It is also what produces a noticeable throat hit, which is the sensation that, for most people switching from cigarettes, makes vaping feel familiar.

Both ingredients are widely used in food and pharmaceuticals, and all e-liquids sold in the UK are regulated under TPD rules.

A 50/50 e-liquid contains equal parts PG and VG. That balance makes it thin enough to wick quickly through smaller coils, which is why it works across every pod kit and starter device. Without one overpowering the other, the flavour comes through clearly, and the throat hit is more apparent. As for vapour, it produces smaller, tidier clouds.

Nicotine-wise, 50/50 covers a full range: from 0mg all the way up to 20mg. Nic salts are almost exclusively formulated at this ratio, which is why they pair so well with low-wattage pod systems.

If you have recently switched from smoking or used to disposables, 50/50 vape juice is the closest match to that familiar feel.

Where 50/50 is about balance, 70/30 e-liquids are designed for vapour production. At 70% VG and 30% PG, it’s noticeably thicker, and that higher VG concentration makes it slower to pass through the coils, making each draw smoother and gentler on the throat, while bringing bigger clouds.

70/30 is the standard for shortfill e-liquids, sold in larger bottles (usually 50ml or 100ml) without nicotine, with space left to add a nic shot to your preferred strength. These liquids need coils with wide wicking ports to absorb the thicker consistency properly.

Picking the right ratio is not just about preference; your device technically determines which one will work. Coil resistance is the most direct indicator, telling you how fast it absorbs liquid and how much power it needs to fire.

Pods and starter kits run on coils above 1.0 ohm at low wattage, with tight wicking ports, which specifically suit 50/50 blends. The thinner liquid absorbs quickly and consistently at that resistance, which is why most nic salts are already formulated this way. There’s no compatibility issue to work around; the market has already matched the liquid to the device.

MTL devices are built to replicate the tight draw and throat hit of a cigarette. Both those qualities come from PG, so 50/50 is the natural fit here too. Changing to a 70/30 vape juice softens the draw and reduces the hit, which undercuts the reason most MTL users choose this vaping in the first place.

Sub-ohm devices run at higher wattages, with coils below 0.6 ohm and wide wicking channels built to handle thicker liquid. 70/30 VG/PG e-liquids are the standard for this setup, which is why the shortfill e-liquid exists: bigger bottles, higher VG, and lower nicotine strengths suited to the higher consumption rate of sub-ohm vaping.

Pairing the wrong ratio with the wrong device causes real, immediate problems. Put a thick 70/30 into a pod kit with a 1.0 ohm, and the cotton can’t absorb the liquid quickly enough. The coil fires before it is saturated, producing a harsh, burnt hit. 

Similarly, running a 50/50 vape juice through a high-wattage sub-ohm device vaporises the liquid faster than the device is built for, making each draw harsher and too hot. Repeat that a few times, and your coil is ruined.

More than improving the experience, the right ratio protects the hardware and makes every vape perform the way it is meant to.

Most vapers set their nicotine level and leave it there. What they rarely adjust is the ratio that controls how the strength is felt.

PG carries nicotine more effectively than VG. That’s why a 50/50 blend at a given strength tends to feel sharper and more immediate than a 70/30 VG/PG e-liquid at the same strength. In a low-wattage pod kit, where you are taking smaller, less frequent draws, the higher the PG content, the nicotine lands cleanly and quickly.

With 70/30 shortfills, the expected nicotine strength range drops significantly, typically 3mg or 6mg after adding a nic shot. Sub-ohm devices vaporise liquid at a far higher rate, so even a modest concentration builds up faster than you expect.

Going above 6mg in a sub-ohm device is rarely comfortable. So, if you are looking for a stronger nicotine hit, you’ll almost always get more satisfaction from a nic salt e-liquid in a pod kit than from chasing higher concentrations through a sub-ohm vape.

There is no “better” ratio between 50/50 and 70/30 vape juice; just the one that fits your device properly. Once that is matched, everything else, the flavour, the hit, the nicotine delivery, falls into place on its own. Ultimately, it is not a preference you shop around for, but a starting point that makes every other choice worth making.
