What Are Pod Coils?Â
Replacement pods, also known as pod cartridges or fixed-coil pods, are super-convenient atomiser heads that allow you to change your whole coil head at once without the need to fiddle around with any little components.Â
Â
A pod has all three major components of a traditional vape device's atomiser: the tank, the wick, and the coil wire.Â
Â
To use a pod, you’ll need to slot it into your pod device and fill it with e-liquid. Next, let the vape juice soak into the wick. Finally, fire the device to send an electrical charge through the coil wire, heating it up rapidly to vaporise your e-liquid into flavoursome vapour!Â
Â
Unlike traditional devices, you won’t need to replace any individual components. Once the coil has reached the end of its lifespan, just pop out the entire thing and replace it with a fresh one!Â
Â
When Should You Replace Your Pod?Â
Just like regular coils, vape pods don’t last forever. Over time, thanks to the constant reheating from the coil wire, the wick will degrade, which can cause a funny burnt taste.Â
Â
You can spot when you need to change your pod cartridge by keeping an eye on three factors — the look, the smell, and the taste.Â
Â
Most pods allow you to see the white wick on the inside. This changes colour over time. When it goes brown or black, it can be a sign that it needs to be changed.Â
Â
A second big giveaway is the smell. If the pod produces a singeing smell when activated, there’s a good chance you’re using too high of a wattage. Lower the wattage and try again. If the smell persists, the coil is burnt, and it’s time to make a switch!Â
Â
The biggest indicator is the taste. If your e-liquid tastes funny whenever you take a hit, that is a sure sign that the wick is burnt and needs to be replaced.Â
Â
Most replacement pods are sold in multi-packs of three or five, so all you’ll need to do is pop a new one out of the foil, plug it into your device, and enjoy some fresh flavour!Â
Â
How Long Do Pods Last?Â
There is no exact lifespan for any pod cartridge. How long they’ll last depends on the amount of usage, wattage, and even the e-liquid you use. Some pods could last a few days, while others can last weeks on end.Â
Â
In general, we would expect plus-ohm pods to last for somewhere around three weeks after moderate use. Sub-ohm pods might not last quite as long, burning out after around a week.Â
Â
With that being said, you can massively extend your pod cartridges’ lifespan by operating them on a lower wattage! Operating on a lower wattage, the coil doesn’t reach the same higher temperatures, helping to preserve the integrity of the wick for longer. Â
Â
What Are Pod Coil Resistances and Ohms?
Pods, just like coils, each have their own resistance. The resistance of a pod is how much the conductive wire resists the electrical charge fired from the battery.Â
Â
Some pods have a lower resistance, while others have a high resistance. Electricity can travel easily through a low-resistance coil, allowing it to heat up more. High-resistance coils, on the other hand, don’t allow electricity to move as quickly and heat up slower.Â
Â
This resistance is measured by ‘ohms’ (Ω). This is why coils are listed with resistances like 0.6Ω and 1.2Ω.Â
Â
Lower-resistance pods range from 0.2Ω to 0.6Ω and are designed for direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping. Higher-resistance coils range from 0.8Ω and above and are best suited for ex-smokers seeking a familiar mouth-to-lung (MTL) experience.Â
Â
Which Replacement Pod Is Right for Your Pod Device?Â
Be careful when buying your pods! Replacement pods aren’t universal, so you’ll need to double-check a few things before making a purchase.Â
Â
The replacement pod you’ll need will depend on the brand of device you’re using. For example, you won’t be able to use a DA ONE pod in a device that requires GeekVape pods.Â
Â
Remember, though, checking the brand name isn’t all you need to do. Every vape manufacturer has a wide range of devices, so they have a range of different pods too. Some pods can work with multiple different kits, but be sure to check first.Â
