Beginner’s Guide to Vaping
Walking down the street these days, you’re more likely to see people vaping rather than smoking old school cigarettes. According to the NHS, around 2.9 million people in Britain currently vape and that number is set to grow.
Most people are drawn towards vaping as much less harmful alternative to smoking and to quit smoking altogether. It’s also subject to fewer smoking ban rules and there’s a huge variety of great e-liquid flavours to choose from. Beginning your vaping journey can be a little daunting though so we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to vaping to start you off on the right foot.
Beginner’s Guide to Vaping – Getting to know the kit
The first thing you’ll need to start vaping is the e-cigarette itself. These are handheld, battery operated systems which heat the e-liquid to create a vapour.
E-cigs can range from simple cigalikes (which are disposable and look like actual cigarettes) and closed pod systems (where you buy the e liquid in small pods then dispose of the pods when finished), to more advanced devices called mods (which have refillable tanks, replaceable coils and more user preferences).

Beginner’s Guide to Vaping – Understanding e-liquid
When you buy e-liquids you will see (or can choose) the VG:PG ratio. Basically, remember ‘V’ as the amount of vapour that will be generated and ‘P’ as the amount of flavour (like PG Tips tea!). Therefore, a 50%VG : 50%PG ratio would be standard and can be used in most ecigs. Most people start moving on to a higher percentage of VG as they become used to vaping and want to make more clouds!
Enough of the boring stuff; it’s the huge variety of e liquid flavours which vapers are drawn to. You’ll never be bored trying all the flavours available. You have dessert e liquid such as Raspberry Doughnut E Liquid, sweet flavoured e liquid like Wild Cherry Watermelon E Liquid, drink flavoured e liquid like Fantasi Orange E Liquid, all the way to richer flavours such as Caffe Latte.
Vape liquid also comes in a variety of nicotine strengths to suit everyone. Here’s a general rule of thumb:
- 0mg – No nicotine at all
- 3mg – The most popular choice for vapers
- 6mg – Full flavour e liquid with a higher nicotine percentage
- 12mg – The mid-range for ex casual smokers
- 18mg – Very high for those who were a heavy smoker
As of 20 May 2017, the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) restricts the maximum volume of nicotine-containing e-liquid for sale in one refill container to 10ml which is why most 10ml bottles of e-liquid contain the nicotine strength of your choice already.
As a result, larger volume shortfill e-liquid bottles, where you add nicotine shots into it yourself to the desired strength, have become very popular among vapers. By the way, shortfill just means that there is some space left in the bottle to add your nicotine shot (or shots).
